The first time I planned a family trip to Dubai, I spent hours comparing hotels, apartments, areas, and reviews. Dubai is a huge city, and where you stay can completely change your experience.
After multiple visits, I've stayed in both Downtown Dubai and Al Barsha, explored Marina and JBR extensively, and made a few mistakes along the way too.
If my own family were visiting Dubai for the first time tomorrow, I already know exactly where I would tell them to stay.
Not because it's the most luxurious option.
Not because it's the cheapest.
But because comfort matters when you're traveling with children.
Here's what I genuinely think after experiencing Dubai as a family.
My First Choice: Downtown Dubai
If this is your first trip to Dubai and your budget allows it, I would personally choose Downtown Dubai.
On one of our trips, we stayed at Damac Maison Privé and it ended up being one of the most comfortable family stays we've ever had.
What made it special wasn't just the location. It was how easy everything felt.
Dubai Mall was about a 10-minute walk away. Carrefour was right downstairs. The apartment had a kitchenette with everything we needed, a comfortable living area, and a sofa bed that worked perfectly for the kids.
After long days exploring Dubai, having space to relax instead of squeezing into a standard hotel room made a huge difference.
The canal views were beautiful, especially in the evenings, and being so close to major attractions saved us hours of travel time.
Why I Loved Staying in Downtown Dubai
- Walking distance to Dubai Mall
- Close to Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain
- Family-friendly apartments available
- Grocery stores nearby
- Less time spent commuting
- Comfortable for longer stays with children
If your goal is to explore the city's most famous attractions, Downtown is hard to beat.

Best Budget-Friendly Option: Al Barsha
If I wanted to save money without sacrificing convenience, I would choose Al Barsha.
During our most recent trip, we stayed at Mena Plaza Al Barsha and honestly, it offered excellent value.
The hotel was only a few minutes' walk from Mall of the Emirates, which meant easy access to the Dubai Metro.
That alone makes a huge difference.
One thing I love about Al Barsha is that everything feels nearby. Restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, shopping, and transportation are all within easy reach.
It's not as glamorous as Downtown or Marina, but for families trying to manage a budget, it makes a lot of sense.
Why Al Barsha Works So Well
- Excellent Metro access
- Walking distance to Mall of the Emirates
- More affordable hotels
- Plenty of dining options
- Great base for exploring the city
If you're visiting Dubai for the first time but want to keep accommodation costs reasonable, Al Barsha is one of the smartest choices.

What About Dubai Marina and JBR?
This is where many first-time visitors immediately want to stay.
And honestly?
I understand why.
Dubai Marina is beautiful.
JBR has one of the best beach atmospheres in the city.
The restaurants, waterfront views, evening walks, and overall energy make the area feel exciting.
But with children, I personally think Marina and JBR are places you should spend time rather than necessarily base your entire trip around.
Accommodation here is usually more expensive than Al Barsha and often more expensive than Downtown apartments.
That said, if you're visiting during winter, I highly recommend dedicating at least one full day to JBR. My kids absolutely loved it. The beach is free, the atmosphere is fantastic, and there are plenty of places to eat and relax.
One Experience We Really Enjoyed
One evening we took a speedboat ride around the Marina instead of booking a traditional dinner cruise.
We had already done the larger cruise experience before, so this time we wanted something different.
Seeing the Marina skyline at night from the water was beautiful and the cooler February weather made the experience even better.
Attractions That Were Worth It (And One That Wasn't)
Ski Dubai – Absolutely Worth It
If you're traveling with kids, Ski Dubai was one of the highlights of our trip.
It felt completely surreal stepping from Dubai's heat into snow.
The children had an amazing time and it was one of those experiences that everyone still talks about.
A useful tip: check Cobone before booking. We've found some great discounts there in the past.
Desert Safari – Worth It If You Book Carefully
A good desert safari can become one of the best memories from Dubai.
A bad one can ruin an entire day.
We once booked a very cheap safari experience and spent so much time waiting that the entire experience felt rushed and disappointing.
Since then, I've learned that sometimes paying a little extra for a reputable operator is worth it.
For activities like this, I prefer booking through trusted platforms rather than simply choosing the cheapest option available.

Legoland – Depends on Your Child's Age
This one surprised us.
Our younger child absolutely loved Legoland. Our older child was bored much faster than we expected. If your children are younger, it's a great option.
If they're older and enjoy thrill rides, I would personally choose IMG Worlds of Adventure instead.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Dubai?
For families, my favorite time to visit is between November and March.
The weather is pleasant, outdoor attractions are enjoyable, and places like Marina, JBR, and beach areas truly come alive. I would avoid August completely. The heat can be intense, especially if you're planning outdoor activities.
That said, if your focus is indoor attractions and shopping, September can offer some surprisingly good hotel deals. One of our stays at Damac Maison Privé was significantly cheaper than peak-season prices.
What I'd Pack for Dubai With Kids
A few things that genuinely make Dubai easier:
- Portable fan
- Power bank
- Reusable water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Sun hat
- Lightweight backpack

My Honest Recommendation
If my sister called me tomorrow and asked where she should stay during her first family trip to Dubai, my answer would be simple.
If the budget allows it, I would choose Downtown Dubai, ideally an apartment-style stay similar to Damac Maison Privé.
The location, comfort, kitchenette, nearby grocery stores, and easy access to attractions make family travel so much easier.
If budget is a priority, I would choose Al Barsha without hesitation.
It's practical, connected, affordable, and one of the smartest areas for first-time visitors.
Dubai can feel overwhelming if you spend too much time commuting between attractions.
Choosing the right base allows you to enjoy the city instead of rushing through it.
And that's ultimately what makes a family trip memorable.
Not how much you see.
But how much you enjoy the experience together.
