Tokyo With Kids: 8 Family Experiences Your Kids Will Love

When we first started planning our Japan trip, everyone told us Tokyo would be exciting.

What no one told us was just how incredible it would be with children.

From magical Disney memories and immersive digital art to peaceful parks, skyline views, and unforgettable family experiences, Tokyo turned out to be one of the easiest cities we've ever explored as a family. It was clean, organised, incredibly safe, and full of attractions that both children and adults genuinely enjoyed.

If you're planning your first family trip to Japan, these are the eight experiences we'd personally recommend after exploring Tokyo ourselves.

    1. Tokyo Disneyland

If there's one place your children will remember long after the trip ends, it's Tokyo Disneyland.

Watching our kids experience the parades, fireworks, and their favourite Disney characters made every step worth it. Beauty and the Beast quickly became our favourite ride, and even as adults, we couldn't stop smiling.

One thing I'd do differently next time? I'd stay near Tokyo Disney Resort for at least three nights so we could enjoy both Disneyland and DisneySea without feeling rushed.

    Our Family Verdict

Without a doubt, the happiest day of our Japan trip. Next time we'd stay closer to Disney and spread both parks over separate days.

    2. Tokyo DisneySea

Although we didn't manage to visit DisneySea because everyone was exhausted after Disneyland, it's already at the top of our list for next time.

DisneySea is unique to Japan and is often considered one of the best Disney parks in the world. Families with older children especially love the adventurous rides, beautiful themed lands, and unique attractions you won't find anywhere else.

If you're planning your itinerary, I'd highly recommend staying near Disney and visiting Disneyland and DisneySea one day apart.

    3. TeamLab Borderless

Walking into TeamLab Borderless felt like stepping into another world.

The constantly changing digital artwork, glowing rooms, immersive projections, and interactive installations fascinated both the children and us.

Unlike a traditional museum, there isn't a fixed path. You simply wander, discover, and experience each room together, making every visit unique.

It's one of those attractions that's impossible to describe until you see it yourself.

    Our Family Verdict

One of the most unique experiences we've ever had. It amazed the kids just as much as it amazed us.

    4. KidZania Tokyo

KidZania was one of our children's favourite experiences in Tokyo, and it's something I'd recommend to every family visiting Japan.

Imagine an entire miniature city built just for children, where they can become firefighters, doctors, chefs, pilots, police officers, and many more professions.

Our children had an amazing time, but if there's one tip I'd give, it's this: allow more time than you think you'll need.

Our session lasted around five hours, and even then, they only managed to complete four activities because each experience has limited capacity and waiting times. Before we knew it, our time was over, and they still had a long list of jobs they wanted to try.

KidZania isn't just entertainment. It builds confidence, independence, and lets children experience different careers while having fun.

    Our Family Verdict

One of the most memorable experiences of our Tokyo trip. Five hours simply wasn't enough, and we'd happily dedicate an entire day next time.

    5. Ueno Park & Ueno Zoo

Not every day in Tokyo needs to be packed with theme parks.

Ueno Park offers a slower pace, beautiful walking paths, open spaces, and one of Japan's oldest zoos.

It was the perfect place to slow down after several busy sightseeing days, and the relaxed atmosphere made it easy for everyone to recharge.

If you're travelling with younger children, this area deserves a spot on your itinerary.

    Our Family Verdict

One of the most relaxing family days we had in Tokyo.

    6. Shibuya Sky

Tokyo is impressive from street level.

    It's unforgettable from above.

Watching the city stretch endlessly into the distance while thousands of people crossed the famous Shibuya Crossing below was one of our favourite memories.

If possible, visit around sunset. Watching Tokyo slowly light up is something you'll never forget.

    Our Family Verdict

The perfect way to appreciate just how incredible Tokyo really is.

    7. Odaiba

Odaiba quickly became one of our favourite family areas in Tokyo.

From the giant Gundam statue and beautiful waterfront views to shopping malls, arcades, restaurants, and wide open spaces, there's something here for every member of the family.

It's the perfect place to spend a relaxed afternoon without rushing between attractions.

    Our Family Verdict

A fantastic mix of entertainment, shopping, and beautiful waterfront scenery.

    8. Sunshine City & Sunshine Aquarium

If you're looking for a more relaxed indoor day, Sunshine City is a wonderful choice.

Inside you'll find Sunshine Aquarium, shopping, restaurants, character stores, entertainment, and plenty to keep children occupied for hours.

It's especially useful if you're visiting during rainy weather or simply want a slower-paced day between sightseeing.

    Our Family Verdict

A great hidden gem that's perfect for families wanting a full indoor day.

What I'd Do Differently Next Time

Now that we've experienced Tokyo as a family, there are a few things I'd change.

    • I'd stay near Tokyo Disney Resort for at least three nights.
    • I'd spend at least 10 days exploring Tokyo because there is still so much left to see.
    • I'd research even more Japanese food before arriving so we could try even more local dishes.
    • I'd leave extra free time for spontaneous discoveries because some of our favourite memories happened when we weren't following a schedule.

    Final Thoughts

Tokyo surprised us in the best possible way.

We expected a busy city filled with skyscrapers and crowds.

Instead, we found one of the most family-friendly cities we've ever visited.

Everything felt organised, clean, safe, and incredibly easy to navigate with children.

Even after spending several days there, we left feeling like we'd only scratched the surface.

    And honestly?

If someone asked us where we'd happily return tomorrow, Tokyo would be right at the top of our list.
